Who Needs a Class A CDL?
The federal standard CDL classification, combined with the cargo being transported, determines what type of CDL license a driver must apply for. Any combination of vehicles with gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more falls in Group A, provided the GVWR of the vehicle (trailer) being towed are in excess of 10,000 pounds.
This includes most large combination vehicles (truck & trailer) such as:
Tractor-trailers (also known as Semi, Big Rig or 18-wheeler)
Truck and trailer combinations
Fuel tankers
Livestock carriers
Flatbeds
NOTE: Class A vehicles require tremendous skill and knowledge, included in Class B and C vehicles, so a driver with a Class A license may also drive vehicles in Classes B and C, depending on endorsement requirements.
